Attorney General Joseph A. Foster and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Robert L. Quinn announce the final report on the fatal shooting of Mark McAuley in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, on April 14, 2012.

At about 1:00 p.m. on April 14, 2012, the Hinsdale Police Department received a call from the mother of Douglas Farr ("suspect"), Monica Burdette, reporting in substance that she could not find Mr. Farr and that he was "upset." Members of the police department then began looking for Mr. Farr.

At a little before 2:30 p.m. on April 14, a member of the Chesterfield Police Department travelled to North Hinsdale Road in response to a 911 call. The cellular telephone reception of the apparent location of the originating call was "spotty," and the 911 call received was "broken," but among the information gathered was that a man had been shot. Within minutes, a member of the Chesterfield Police Department responded to the area of North Hinsdale Road. There, the officer encountered in an automobile the suspect, as well as Ms. Burdette and the suspect's fiancée, Erin Brault.

According to Ms. Burdette and Ms. Brault, while looking for the suspect they happened across him on North Hinsdale Road. The suspect had an apparent (later confirmed) gunshot wound to his shoulder and was crying and visibly upset. The suspect reported in substance that "there was another guy in the woods," that he (the suspect) shot him, and that he was dead. The suspect also provided a more specific location of the dead man's whereabouts. A .40-caliber pistol and a loaded magazine were inside the automobile with the suspect. That weapon belonged to the suspect.

Officers went to the area described by the suspect, a wooded area with no nearby residences by a little-used dirt road, and there found the body of the victim, Mark McAuley. The victim had multiple apparent gunshot wounds. The autopsy revealed that the victim had been shot six times. The cause of the victim's death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled by the Medical Examiner to be a homicide.

Investigation into the victim's death focused on the suspect. Although the suspect admitted to shooting the victim, the suspect provided an account of events that, although implausible, warranted further investigation as to the validity of his claim of self-defense. Given the lack of apparent eyewitnesses to the shooting incident and the events that precipitated and motivated it, further investigation occurred to develop the connection and relationship between the suspect and victim, to establish how and why they came to be in the area of North Hinsdale Road where the shooting incident occurred, and to locate any initially unknown material witnesses. For all these reasons, an arrest was not made in connection with the victim's homicide.

While investigators pursued these investigative avenues, the suspect and a material witness in the investigation, Erin Brault, died together in a motor vehicle crash. Since the deaths of the suspect and Ms. Brault, investigators continued follow-up to ascertain what happened between the suspect and the victim, and verify that no other material witnesses to what happened between the victim and the suspect were present when the suspect shot and killed the victim. Those efforts recently concluded.

Based on the investigation conducted, on April 14, 2012, it is clear that Douglas Farr shot and killed victim Mark McAuley. There are no other suspects in the case, and today no other person is being sought in connection with the homicide of Mark McAuley. Therefore, the case will be closed.
