Greenland, NH - Political Advertisement Mailer

Concord, NH - Attorney General John M. Formella provides the following status update on the Special Election in Greenland occurring on Saturday, December 18, 2021:

Beginning on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office received multiple complaints regarding a mailer related to the Town of Greenland’s December 18 Special Election. That mailer is political advertising, under New Hampshire law, as it refers to the sole issue on the ballot in this Special Election, which is whether Greenland should hand count ballots after its elections rather than use an electronic ballot counting device.

Under RSA 664:14, political advertising, such as the mailer at issue, is required to be “signed” to identify if a group issued the mailer. An individual may not be subject to the same requirement. This mailer does not contain any information identifying who paid for or issued the mailer. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating this political advertising to ensure compliance with New Hampshire law.

However, given the short period of time between the delivery of the mailer and the Special Election on Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office may not be able to complete its investigation prior to the Special Election. The citizens of Greenland should know that the Attorney General’s Office takes this possible violation of New Hampshire law very seriously and the Office is responding to their numerous complaints and concerns regarding this mailer as quickly as possible.
