Autopsy Results and Identification of the Deceased Individual in the December 23, 2017 Officer Involved Shooting Incident in Canaan, New Hampshire

Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Christopher J. Wagner and Canaan Police Chief Sam Frank announce additional information concerning an officer-involved shooting incident that took place in Canaan, New Hampshire. During that incident, a New Hampshire State Police Trooper discharged his firearm and fatally wounded Jesse J. Champney (age 26), of Enfield, New Hampshire. The Trooper was not physically injured during the incident.

Earlier today, New Hampshire's Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jennie V. Duval conducted an autopsy on Mr. Champney. Dr. Duval determined that Mr. Champney had four gunshot wounds. One of the gunshot wounds was a fatal wound and was the cause of death. Additional details regarding the gunshot wounds will be provided as soon as possible while still protecting the integrity of the investigation. The manner of Mr. Champney's death is homicide. As used by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, homicide is defined as the killing of one person by another.

This incident is being investigated by the Attorney General's Office in conjunction with the State Police Major Crime Unit. Pursuant to protocol, the name of the Trooper involved in the incident is being withheld pending the Trooper's formal interview. The interview is expected to take place next week.

The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain actively under investigation.
