Disclosure of the Massachusetts State Troopers' Names from the June 15, 2017, Officer Involved Shooting Incident in Newton, New Hampshire

Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Christopher J. Wagner announce the names of the four Massachusetts State Troopers involved in the shooting incident on June 15, 2017, in Newton, New Hampshire, that resulted in the death of Michael R. Brown (age 40) of Presque Isle, Maine.

The four Massachusetts Troopers who discharged their weapons were Trooper Michael Caranfa, who has approximately fifteen years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to the Newbury, Massachusetts barracks, Trooper Robert Holland, who has approximately seven years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to the Andover, Massachusetts barracks, Trooper George Katsarakes, who has approximately twenty seven years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to the Newbury, Massachusetts barracks, and Trooper Daniel Purtell, who has approximately twelve years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to Special Operations.

The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain actively under investigation. It is anticipated that a preliminary report regarding whether the troopers' use of deadly force was justified will be released once the investigation is completed.

Pursuant to Massachusetts State Police protocol, the four Troopers are on paid administrative leave.
