Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Christopher J. Wagner announce additional information related to the incident which occurred at the New Hampshire State Liquor Store, South-Bound, in Hampton earlier today.

According to police reports, at approximately 12:00 p.m. today, the Portsmouth Police Department issued a "be on the lookout" (BOLO) for Barry Jones (age 36) of Portsmouth. The police had been provided information that Jones was intoxicated and took his neighbor's truck. The truck was reported to be a 2002 silver Ford Ranger pick-up. It was also reported that Mr. Jones was armed with a handgun, had pointed the reported handgun at an individual, and indicated that he wanted the individual to drive with him to Lawrence, Massachusetts to get some drugs.

A few minutes after taking the vehicle, Mr. Jones crashed the vehicle along Grafton Drive in Portsmouth, causing damage to the vehicle's front left tire. Mr. Jones then continued onto Interstate 95 traveling in a southerly direction.

At approximately 12:24 p.m., a New Hampshire State Police Trooper spotted the vehicle reported driven by Mr. Jones at the New Hampshire State Liquor Store in Hampton. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., there was an encounter between New Hampshire State Troopers and Mr. Jones in front of the Liquor Store, where one or two of the Troopers discharged their weapons.

Mr. Jones was treated at the scene for at least one gunshot wound and was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was pronounced dead earlier this afternoon. His identity is being released as his next of kin has been notified. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow at the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Concord.

The exact circumstances surrounding the officer(s) discharge of his weapon remains actively under investigation. Per protocol the names of the officers involved in this incident are being withheld pending each officer's formal interview. Further, per protocol, each officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.

At the time of the incident, it has been reported that there were 15 customers, 3 vendors, and 8 employees in the Liquor Store, and 2 employees in the New Hampshire Made Country Store. No officers or civilians were physically injured.
