Arrest in Nashua Homicide

New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph A. Foster and Nashua Police Chief Andrew Lavoie announce that an arrest has been made in the Nashua homicide that occurred on Friday, January 6, 2017.

Devin Tappan, age 30, of 32 Kinsley Street, Apartment 1, Nashua, New Hampshire has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder. The charge alleges that Tappan recklessly caused the death of Javier Rivera Afanador under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life by repeatedly striking him in the head with a hand-held weight.

On January 6, 2017, at approximately 7:24 p.m., police discovered the body of Mr. Afanador at 32 Kinsley Street, Apartment 1, in response to an anonymous call for a welfare check at that apartment. Mr. Afanador, age 45, lived at 32 Kinsley Street, Apartment 8, Nashua, New Hampshire.

On January 7, 2017, an autopsy was performed on Mr. Afanador's body by the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of New Hampshire, Jennie Duval. Dr. Duval determined that the cause of Mr. Afanador's death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head and ruled Mr. Afanador's death a homicide.

Mr. Tappan was arrested on unrelated charges on January 7, 2017 and was arraigned on those charges this morning. He was then arrested at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections on the Second Degree Murder charge this morning. His arraignment is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., on Monday, January 9, 2017, at the 9th Circuit, Nashua District Division Court on Spring Street in Nashua.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Nashua Police Department at 603-594-3500.
