Portsmouth Martial Arts Academy Enters Into Agreement with Attorney Heneral Over Failure to Register with the Attorney General's Office

Attorney General Joseph A. Foster announces that his office has entered into an Assurance of Discontinuance with Guy Chase d/b/a Guy Chase Academy of Martial Arts/Legendary Martial Arts Academy (the Academy), a martial arts school located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Assurance resolves allegations that the Academy failed to register with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Bureau since it opened in August, 2007.

Under the terms of the Assurance, the Academy must register annually, as required by the martial arts school statute, NH RSA 358-S, and must pay a sum of $500.00 in lieu of a civil penalty for the past failures to register.

All owners and operators of health clubs and martial arts schools are reminded that they are required to register annually with the Attorney General. Martial Arts School must register under N.H. RSA 358-S. Health Clubs must register under NH RSA 358-I. Registration could require securing a bond to protect consumer prepayments. Failure to register and to otherwise comply with these statutes could be an unfair or deceptive practice under the State's Consumer Protection Act, NH RSA 358-A.

Owners or operators with questions about the registration process are urged to call the Consumer Protection Bureau at 603-271-3643.

Consumers with questions or complaints can call the Attorney General's consumer information line at 1-888-468-4454 or file a complaint on-line at: http://doj.nh.gov/consumer/complaints/index.htm.
