Autopsy Results in Officer-involved Shooting Incident in Rochester, New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office and the New Hampshire State Police report additional developments in an officer-involved shooting investigation occurring in Rochester this past Monday, March 10, 2014.

An autopsy was completed by the Maine Medical Examiner's Office. That Office has concluded that the cause of Ben Shannon's death was three gunshot wounds to the arms and torso, and that the manner of death was homicide. It is important to note that the manner of death of "homicide" is a medical conclusion that a cause of death was inflicted by another person. It is not a legal conclusion that a crime has occurred.

In the course of interviewing witnesses, investigators have learned that there may be some public confusion as to the involvement of the Rochester Police Department in the incident. To clarify, the shooting incident did not involve any member of the Rochester Police Department. Rochester Police officers were called to the scene after a call of shots fired was received. They were neither present nor involved in the incident itself.

The investigation is ongoing.
