Jeffery A. Strelzin, Senior Assistant Attorney General
Chief, Homicide Unit
New Hampshire Attorney General Michael A. Delaney, State Police Colonel Robert Quinn, Fire Marshal J. William Degnan and Atkinson Police Chief Philip V. Consentino announce that a death investigation is ongoing in Atkinson.
The investigation began yesterday when a woman walking through some woods near a pond off of Pentucket Court in Atkinson came upon a dead body. Authorities were notified and responded to the scene where they discovered the burned body of a deceased adult male. After that discovery, the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, the New Hampshire State Police, the State Fire Marshall's Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner were notified and began an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
As part of the investigation, a search of the area was conducted last night and will be continuing today. In addition, an autopsy is scheduled on the deceased for later today or tomorrow. Autopsy results are expected to be released no earlier than tomorrow.
Authorities have also been looking into missing persons in the area to see if the physical descriptions of any of those persons are consistent with the deceased male. Based on those efforts, a missing person with physical characteristics consistent with the deceased has been identified. The investigation is now focused on trying to determine if the missing person is, in fact, the deceased and what the circumstances were that led to his death.
