Criminal Justice Bureau
Attorney General Michael A. Delaney and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Robert Quinn announce that Barry Winters died on February 4, 2012. Winters had been arrested on December 27, 2011, for the first degree murder of Evelyn Spodnik. The charge against Winters alleged that he poured gasoline on Ms. Spodnik and then lit her on fire. Winters likewise lit himself on fire in an attempted murder-suicide. Ms. Spodnik died on July 1, 2011, as a result of the injuries inflicted on her by Winters on June 29, 2011.
Winters had been incarcerated at the Grafton County House of Corrections since his return to New Hampshire on January 3, 2012. On February 5, 2012, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Jennie Duval conducted an autopsy on Winters. While a final cause of death is pending further test results, Dr. Duval has preliminarily concluded that Winters died from complications of his self-inflicted burns. A final cause of death will be determined once pending testing is completed in approximately six weeks.
