New Hampshire Attorney General Michael A. Delaney, and Londonderry Police Chief William R. Hart announce that the investigation into the deaths of Doreen Malek, age 49, and Michael McCartney, age 49, of Overlook Avenue in Londonderry has been completed and closed. As previously announced, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Jennie Duval, concluded that Doreen Malek died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, and that her death was a homicide. She further concluded that Michael McCartney died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and that his death was a suicide.
The scene investigation, witness interviews, and other background information collected by investigators confirmed that Michael McCartney shot Doreen Malek in the chest with a shotgun sometime during the evening of January 7, 2010. He then shot himself in the head with the same shotgun, which came from the home. Mr. McCartney left a suicide note, indicating that the reason for his action was concern over health problems that Ms. Malek had recently suffered. The investigation revealed that Mr. McCartney had apparently been upset about those medical issues and also about financial reversals the couple has recently experienced. There was nothing to indicate, however, that Ms. Malek knew in advance or sanctioned Mr. McCartney's plan in any way.
